Los Angeles is world-renowned in the entertainment and communication field, besides being a major hub of shipping, industry, finance, and manufacturing. Major industries of Los Angeles County are international trade, supported by the Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles, motion picture and television production, aerospace, music recording and production, and professional services like law and medicine. Los Angeles County is mainly associated with the entertainment industry with most of the major studios, including 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros, Sony, and Walt Disney Studios, all located within the boundaries of the county, in the cities of Los Angeles, Burbank, Culver City, and Glendale. The recording industry is another major player in the entertainment economy, with major labels either based in Los Angeles, or having facilities there with employment for thousands of workers. Giant corporations like Universal Studios in Studio City, Walt Disney in Burbank, are involved in practically all aspects of entertainment, including theme parks.

The largest, major manufacturing centre in the US, is in the city of Los Angeles, with the largest components being apparel, computer, electronic products, transportation products, fabricated metal products, food products, and furniture. The second largest industry in manufacturing, followed closely by fashion apparel, is steel fabrication, and Los Angeles is second to Detroit in the production of automobiles, with Mazda, Honda, Toyota, Volvo, Volkswagen and Nissan, having all located design centre is in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles is a major producer of petroleum products and chemicals, furniture and fixtures, print material, electronic equipment, rubber goods, glass and pottery, ceramics, and cement products. The banking and finance industry in Los Angeles is one of the largest in the US, with more than 100 foreign and countless domestic banks operating their branches in Los Angeles, along with financial law firms and investment banks. Other prominent industries in the city area include education, health services, high-technology research, and development, large construction business, both commercial and residential.
