Glendale


Glendale is a suburban community in Los Angeles County. With a population of 191,719, it is the third largest city in the greater Los Angeles area. Glendale is one of two other large cities that share their name with an even larger city in the United States, the other Glendale being located in Arizona. Surrounded by the Verdugo Mountains, where the San Gabriel Valley meets the San Fernando Valley, Glendale often sees extremes in temperature. It is said to have a Mediterranean climate, reaching highs of 117 degrees during the summer months and lows of 15 degrees on winter nights.

Glendale residents enjoyed a rare snowfall on February of 2011, and sometimes see heavy rain and thunderstorms. The Native American Tongva tribe occupied the land that is now Glendale for hundreds of years. Teodoro Verdugo, son of a corporal in the Spanish American Army, built the Verdugo Adobe on land granted to his father. The adobe still stands, and is the first residence and oldest structure in the city of Glendale. Famous past and current residents of Glendale include actor Shia LeBeouf and ex-police chief Daryl Gates. They city of Glendale is surrounded by the communities of Sun Valley, La Canada Flintridge, Burbank, Eagle Rock, and Pasadena.

Glendale residents enjoy fine dining, shopping, and entertainment at the Americana at Brand, an open-air retail esplanade and gathering place constructed by Rick Caruso, who also built the famed Grove shopping destination in Los Angeles. The unique facility houses live/ work lofts, coffee houses, theaters, and green park-like spaces for enjoying music concerts and leisure time. More shopping is available at the Glendale Galleria, which features stores like Nordstrom, Target, and H & M. Glendale is home to Forest Law Memorial Park Cemetery, and is minutes from television studios and nightlife in Burbank.

Glendale sits conveniently close to three major freeways, the Golden State, Ventura, and Foothill. Children attend school in the Glendale Unified School district, which features several high schools and a magnet school. Glendale City College serves undergraduates in the community. The Metro local and rapid transit system, and the LADOT transport passengers throughout the city and surrounding communities. The California Highway Patrol oversees law enforcement in the community. Glendale has a large Armenian population, with one in four residents being of Armenian decent. The city is home to DreamWorks Animation Studios, which is a major employer in the area, along with Disney Imagineering, The City of Glendale, Glendale Memorial Medical Center, and Glendale Community College.

Downtown Glendale with over 200 shops, restaurants, boutiques, spas, includes world-famous shopping giants Glendale Galleria, Americana at Brand, Glendale Fashion Center, and Alex Theatre for performing arts and entertainment, besides being the U.S. headquarters of Nestlé. Other cultural venues and attractions include Gallery 131 displaying a range of fine arts, Autry Museum of Western Heritage presenting the rich history and tradition of the American West, Glendale Civic Auditorium hosting dance and music, Glendale Center Theatre, and Glendale Central Library.
