Silver Lake

The community of Silver Lake is located in hilly terrain in the city of Los Angeles, near Hollywood and just a few minutes northwest of downtown. Silver Lake is an ethnically and socially diverse neighborhood that is popular with the hipster crowd. Famous residents include musicians Nikki Sixx and Katy Perry, as well as actress Eva Longoria. The enclave, which is situated near Atwater Village, Echo Park, and Los Feliz, was named after Herman Silver, the Water Board’s commissioner who created the Silver Lake Reservoir. Silver Lake is famous for its modernist architecture, which is more plentiful there than almost anywhere else in North America. Famed designer, Rich Neutra, had his own house constructed in Siver Lake. Some Los Angeles residents incorrectly believe that Silver Lake is located on the eastside, but it is actually situated on land west of the Los Angeles River.

Silver Lake shares its name with the reservoir that lies within its boundaries, comprised of two basin named Silver Lake and Ivanhoe. The reservoir is maintained by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and supplies water to 600,000 homes in the downtown and southern Los Angeles area. A jogging path winds around the reservoir, and residents also enjoy a dog park and several sports courts that are located on the grounds. Silver Lake is undergoing a gentrification that is bringing more stylish boutiques, artsy shops, yoga studios, and organic restaurants to the area.

A unique attraction and design element of Silver Lake streets are the municipal staircases, named “Descanso,” “Music Box,” and “Redcliffe.” The stairs traverse up and down the hilly neighborhood, allowing easy access from one area to another. The “Music Box” stairs famously appeared in the Laurel and Hardy film of the same name. Silver Lake is a major player in the alternative music scene. Two huge street festivals occur each year, including the Sunset Junction Street Fair, which has hosted bands like Jane’s Addiction, Beck, Henry Rollins, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Silver Lake’s population in 2000 was 30,972. The community has a large percentage of gay men that call it home, and is comprised of 41.8% Hispanic and 34% white individuals. Children in Silver Lake attend schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District, including several elementary schools, and John Marshall High School.

Silver Lake has become the center of the alternative rock music scene in LA since 1990, and the Sunset Junction Street Fair, the annual music event is held in August in the center of this area. The city has many refreshing bars and venues like the Brite Spot Family Restaurant, El Cid, and Cavern Club Theater. Other attractions are the Silver Lake Recreation Center, offering classes, sports, and summer camps; Holyland Exhibition museum; Synchronicity, the art gallery featuring exhibitions of paintings; and Machine Project the place where art and technology unite.
