West Covina


West Covina is a suburban city the eastern part of the San Gabriel Valley, in Los Angeles County. Located 20 miles east of downtown LA, the community is comprised of primarily middle class families. West Covina was incorporated in 1923 to prevent the city of Covina from building of a sewage farm on the land. The area was once made up of walnut and orange groves. During the post World War II housing boom in the 1950’s and 1960’s, West Covina was the fastest growing city in the United States.

Residents enjoy shopping and dining at the West Covina Fashion Plaza, which was renovated in 1991 and renamed “The Plaza at West Covina.” The mall recently underwent a major expansion, and is now owned by the Westfield shopping chain. The city boasts an expansive public park that houses a sports complex with batting cages, a multi-use field, an ice hockey rink, an18-hole championship quality golf course, and sports facilities that were created to replicate the look of famous ball parks like Fenway Park, Edison Field, and Yankee Stadium. A thriving commercial center houses business offices and retail space, with stores like Target, H & M, and Fresh and Easy anchoring the center. Other major shopping venues in West Covina include The Lakes Entertainment center, a newer plaza that features an Edwards Cinema and Brunswick Lanes. A brand new hotel, The Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott, welcomes visitors to the city of West Covina.

West Covina children and families are served by the West Covina Unified School district, which has eight elementary schools, a middle school, and two high schools. Some area kids are assigned to schools in the Covina Valley Unified School district or the Rowland Unified School District. West Covina is home to ITT Technical Institute, and Azusa Pacific University and Citrus College are nearby.

The population in West Covina, as of the 2010 census, is 106,098. The community is comprised of a demographic that is 15.3% white, 25,8% Asian, and 21.3% of other races. Housing in West Covina is made up mostly of single-family homes and apartment communities, the majority of which are modest and several years old.
